Free ABA Membership for Paralegal Students
Paralegal students can join the ABA for free. To join, please go to the ABA Membership Page, click “Join Now,” enter your school email address, create a profile with username and password, select the category “Others interested in the ABA,” enter your Legal Career Details by selecting “Student” and entering your institution name, anticipated graduation date and degree being pursued (Paralegal). Choose your free member groups and complete your profile.

Regulation of Paralegals
The only state that currently regulates paralegals directly is California, which adopted regulation in 2000 that requires persons using the titles “paralegal,” “legal assistant,” and the like to meet certain educational/experiential qualifications and to meet continuing education requirements. In 2012 the Washington State Supreme Court issued an order adopting the “Limited License Legal Technician” Rule to conduct limited practice in only specified areas of law upon meeting certain educational/experiential qualifications as well as continuing legal education requirements. In 2018, the Utah State Supreme Court launched the “Licensed Paralegal Practitioner” to conduct limited practice in only specified areas of law upon meeting certain educational/experiential qualifications as well as continuing legal education requirements.
